Individual work

The Fragile Earth Research Institute is an extended Earth system science research facility at Biosphere 2 in Oracle, Arizona, nestled in the hilly region of the Santa Catalina Mountains. The building is situated on the berm that connects Biosphere 2 park to the outside world, utilizing the existing topographic contour line to create a dynamic form and corresponding research site spaces. The form of the building is rooted in a desire to create a structure that simultaneously looks both inwards and outwards, providing both advanced experimental space and living space while engaging in dialogue with the surrounding landscape. The building fully considers environmental factors and the goal of sustainable design, combining the characteristics of a mountainous terrain with passive design strategies to create a research center that meets research needs and provides excellent amenities.

CONCEPTS | Slopes as Expermental Labs
With the idea of new Arcology and ongoing programs in Biosphere 2, my design goal is to provide a new research institute where researchers could explore the relationship between nature and artificial nature, a paradigm of a connection between nature and artificial nature. “New arcology system” tries to clarify the relationship between nature and artificial nature with three main components involved: nature, Leo and Hydroponic farm.
